Holly: Moving fearlessly forward with faith

Have you ever met someone and instantly admired them?

That was me with Holly.

She graduated one class after me in dental hygiene school so, of course, I saw her around from a distance.

Oh my goodness, just realize I seem like a stalker. Hah!

Let me quickly get to the point here: I continued to admire her kindness and really blown away by her beauty.

Our friendship truly started to develop on a dental mission trip to Belize in 2014, which was life-changing to say the least.

And y’all, the more I got to know her the more I just fell in love with her!

I think what I loved most (on the mission trip) was her strong faith and how she gracefully carried Him in her heart and through her actions.

To put it simply, Holly’s beauty was much more than skin-deep. It flowed to her core and I just marveled at it.

And I continued to do so through good ole’ social media–she resides near Jackson, Mississippi.

So imagine my complete surprise when she began to document her struggles with her body in the past and present.

She also started sharing her journey with fitness and a healthier lifestyle, which is amazing and inspiring to say the least.

She documents it all (good and bad) but in a way that motivates you to not only improve your life and body, but your mind too, which is so so important.

To not judge your progress by the numbers loss alone, but by celebrating the confidence and fearlessness gained.

But still, I was over here in Charlotte still utterly shocked by all her insecurities and flaws she saw in herself.

Now I don’t want to come off as dismissing her opinions and emotions.

Because I did not.

In fact, I tried hard to see what she saw and instantly knew(like when I first met her), in return, I wanted to show her what I saw in her: all that confidence and fearlessness.

A different perspective from someone on the outside.

I wanted to show her through my eyes all the absolute beauty she holds.

Hence this photo session we did in the wee hours of the morning.

It was the best time.

Coffee seemed like a good place to start at the super cute Cultivation Food Hall.

We got right down to business!

Who are we kidding?! There were lots of giggles!

I mean y’all, how does one go about looking so freakin’ gorgeous in athletic wear?!

The lighting here wasn’t ideal, but it says “step into the light” to me. Or dance into it (her last name is Dancy too)!

Holly,

Thank you thank youuu so much allowing me to capture you and your journey.

My hope is for you to look at these photos and marvel at your beauty inside and out.

You’re an absolute gem.

No matter where you go in life, heed no fear because for you my sweet friend, God has wonderful and beautiful plans for you.

All my love.

Thank you for reading and following along

with me,

Jules.

All angles

Right about now, our good friends, Sam and Cody are on a flight to New Zealand for their fabulous honeymoon!

They got hitched yesterday in an intimate New Orleans ceremony with their closest loved ones (like 20 people!) watching on.

Khang and I can’t wait to celebrate with the newlyweds in Charlotte!

Khang and Cody met in Baton Rouge through work, so naturally, Sam and I met too.

We clicked right away.

You’ve probably seen Sam on the blog when I took her graduation photos!

She has such a fun spirit, so when she causally mentioned wanting to take bridal portraits, I jumped at the opportunity with this sweet girl!

And gosh.. y’all, the photos (and Sam!) took my breath away.

It could not have been a more perfect fall day. And we pretty much had the place to ourselves and couldn’t believe our luck!

Before and even during the photoshoot, Sam repeatedly commented about how nervous she was about taking photos by herself and on making sure that I get the “right angle” of her.

Honestly, I didn’t even stress about those things because she was covered in love and had no bad angles.

That’s just my opinion.

Don’t believe me, keep scrolling to see my session with this gorgeous girl!

Oh you know, just basking in the sun like no big deal.

If you’re not swooning right now, then I have nothing to say to you.

I don’t think anyone else could pull off a dress like this chick right here.

Just look at this gorgeous bride-to-be!!!

What a B O S S.

She held this pose for sooooo long!

Sam, you’re a dime.

I hope you realize by now that the camera loves you and all angles are yours

I can’t explain it but they just are and you just are.

with me,

Jules.

Jodie+David

Alright y’all, if you still do not know, I am one out of five girls.

That’s right.

Five.

I have blogged about Ginni(she had to go and be all unique with her name), Jill, and Joy.

The eldest is Jodie.

Hans and I finally got to photograph her. And my brother-in-law, David!

They came to visit Khang and I here in Charlotte–the firsts from our immediate families! Of course, she and I did not want to miss the opportunity to do a little photo sesh.

Just some background info, they have been together for over 17 years.

It’s absolutely crazy to think about…I mean, I was like 11 when they started dating!?

I’m not one to put a huge emphasis on the number of years, but during the photoshoot, I felt like they had their own silent language.

With a slight eye squint and subtle smirk, it looked like an entire conversation occurred within mere seconds.

But I guess that’s what happens when you’re so in tune with someone.

I had to look away a few times because it felt intimate and private.

When I looked through their scans, it was very evident what I saw that day wasn’t just in my head.

Just scroll down and you’ll see.

We started our beautiful morning at Bryant Park.

Looking so dapper!

A quick outfit change and we were off to Freedom Park.

At first, I was upset with myself with the light. But I soon realized it forced me to filter through, refocus and allowed me to take in her beauty shadow by shadow.

It’s she just gorgeous?! I always thought so.
These next few shots had me in a daze for a good week.

Light was perfect.

Weather was perfect.

They are perfect.

And even after 17 years, their love looks brand spanking new.

And while we are on this topic of “new”. I can honestly say it feels like there is a big shift happening in their relationship.

I loved hearing all about their future plans together and I’ve never seen or heard my sister look or sound so determine and excited for change.

Change is so so good.

It makes these photos mean more that I was able to give to them.

Look at the light reflecting off of her eyelashes! Gosh, Hans never seizes to amaze me with what he captures.

Jodie shared with me that she likes to sway for David whenever she gets all dolled-up, so we sweetly ended with that.

Thank you to Chi Jodie and Anh David for allowing me to capture a glimpse of your love. We loved having y’all here and welcome you back anytime!

Love you both so very much and I cannot wait to see what God has planned for you two.

As always, thank you for reading and following along

with me,

Jules.

Put your pinky rings up to the…Rocky Mountains!

If you’re wondering why I’m always blogging about my adventures a few weeks late, it’s because I must send my film rolls to a specialty lab in Utah, The FINDlab, to get developed and processed.

And I wait.

I patiently wait for their email with my precious scans.

It’s always worth the wait.

Especially these from my trip in Colorado.

Just a little background info: The trip was originally planned by my sister Jill, who wanted to see Bruno Mars. Our good friend, Linh (who lives near Denver) and my best friend Michelle joined in and thus our EPIC GIRLS VACAY was on! We bought concert tickets and flight tickets about 8 months in advanced. We even had coordinated outfits ready for Bruno!

Long story short, I received an email announcing Bruno Mars postponing his concert two nights before showtime!

We were SO bummed out! I’ll admit that I haven’t listened to one of his songs since.

But with a group like ours, we made the best of it.

Surely y’all know by now how much I love being outdoors. I could’ve hiked multiple times a day. Colorado is beautiful.

Lucky for us, we were in good company because Linh’s boyfriend, Justin, was basically our tour guide.

And what I love more than Mother Nature herself is the love and appreciation others have for her too.

Justin 100% has that awe and wonder for the wilderness.

Once again, I can never truly capture the beauty in front of me, but Hans and I had a fun time trying.

I only regret not getting in front of everyone more to get shots of their faces. Stopping to take photos often, I pretty much stayed behind the crew most of the time. Hence lots of “behind shots”. Ha.

Our first hike was at Eldorado Canyon Park.

If you look closely at the towering sandstone cliffs, you’ll notice light green patches. I didn’t photoshop that! It’s the growth of lichen communities, which take over a decade to grow.Cool and amazing how those Douglas firs just grow on the cliffs.
This photo was intentional to show how giant the boulders compared to us. To be fair, Michelle and Jill are “fun-size”.

Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is next! We woke up at 5:30 am to beat the weekend crowds and won! It was freezing, but the sun came out soon enough.Blurry but what cuties!Bear Lake wasn’t really a “hike”. It was more like a casual stroll around the lake with multiple lookouts for perfect photo opportunities like the one below!Light light light. Glorious sunlight.

After Bear Lake and the warm sun, we felt good enough to hike towards Bertha Falls.

So onward we went…and no, I promise I’m not a creeper that’s always stalking her sister from behind. Hah! Like I mentioned earlier, I was caboose. Waterfalls are breathtaking, but a frozen waterfall? A whole ‘nother level! One of the great things about long drives in Denver are the scenic views. Michelle is a genius and probably had the best seat!
Later that day we explored downtown Boulder. The historic architecture was more charming than I was expecting.
I also scored a tiny treasure– 1899 antique world map that I can’t wait to hang up once I make up my mind about how to decorate our home. And I couldn’t resist this adorable home, which is The Pridehouse that supports LGBTQ communities in Boulder County.
Ended our eventful day with these pretty sunset clouds.
Okay, last full day in Colorado.

We went to Red Rocks and almost didn’t because it started to snow…I’m so happy we did.

Just scroll down. You’ll see why.

Barely anyone there.

So quiet.

So serene.

The snow and fog made it even more of a treat.

It’s like a poem.

I personally preferred my visit this time than the time before, where it was so loud and packed with people.

I promised myself that first time that one day I would experience a concert at Red Rocks. It just one of those Bucket List places.

Overwhelmed? So many photos but I had to share all of it. Hope y’all enjoyed them as much as I did taking them.

If you’ve been undecided on whether to visit Colorado or not. Just go. You won’t regret it one bit. Go anywhere there. You’ll sure to be awestruck with its beauty.

Uber thanks to Linh and Justin for being great hosts to me, Jill, and Michelle! I would totally understand if y’all never leave Broomfield. Just another great reason to come visit. Not that we would really need one!

along with me,

Jules.

Fall in the Great Smokies

After a wonderful night at Song Sparrow Hill, we woke up refreshed, ate breakfast, then hesitantly followed Boy and Mangus down the hill back to our car.

We didn’t want to leave! I regretted not booking a second night especially what was to follow later on that evening.

Our next stop was Max Patch Mountain in Pisgah National Forest.

The rocky and narrow winding roads were nerve-wrecking. I felt so bad for Khang’s car tires.

Oh but the views were gorgeous like the one below!

The fall colors peeked through more and more as we got higher in elevation. And so did my excitement!

Parking was ridiculous but the trail was short and pretty straight forward. And so was the steep incline hiking up! It brought back memories from Patagonia.

We were treated with 360º panoramic views!!
The colors were ahhhhmazing!!

And then we took a nap right there.

Fun fact: I can nap anywhere, anytime. Ask my family and friends.

Afterwards we walked around to enjoy the colors some more.

We also played with Hans’ self-timer and got a winning picture of us both for our Christmas card this year!

Here is another attempt at freelensing.

During my research, I read about the sunsets at Max Patch and really wanted to watch it.

But we still had about 4 hours till sun down. I was growing hungry too so we decided to hike back down to the car to eat.

The plan would be to hike back up Max Patch with all our camping gear and set up shop for the night.

Well… unfortunately, when we returned to the car, Khang realized his battery was DEAD.

It was partly my fault. When I’m excited, I tend to rush things and I rushed Khang…well you know how that works…

Fortunately for us, we had jumper cables and the owners of the car parked in front of us came back from their hike and helped jumpstart our car! Lucky stars I tell ya’!

So we drove back down the winding roads to AutoZone to have the battery checked just in case.

Car battery looked fine so…back up the mountain we drove. Khang was basically pro at this point.

And then we carried about 30 pounds of equipment/food/water/clothes back up Max Patch in time to watch the sunset.

Whew! I remember feeling so happy and relieved that we made it to our last stop for the day.

Or so we thought.

So Khang set up the tent while I took photos.

I swear my husband could be a model.

Y’all, he is NOT posing. This was him setting up while glancing at a family trying to fly a kite.

Finally, we sat in our tent eating our favorite: Salami, boursin cheese, and crackers for dinner.

And enjoyed the sunset in the old but Great Smoky Mountains.

I’ll never grow tired of Mother Nature’s beauty!

Wish I could say that was the end to an exhausting but exciting day.

It wasn’t.

Long story short, the sun took all the warmth with it and we weren’t quite prepared for the 40º temperatures. We thought we could brave the cold but it was miserable.

So at around 8, we decided to pack all our stuff, hike back down, and drove home.

We were in our warm bed by midnight.

Hey, we tried. Really really tried.

Another story for our future children. Hah!
